National History Challenge Success

Posted on 14 Nov 2017

Hawker College warmly congratulates two of our wonderful Year 12 History students who achieved highly in the 2017 National History Challenge.  At the award ceremony held at the Museum of Australian Democracy on 26 October, Jesse Blakers and Ineka Voigt were both recognised as budding historians.  Jesse and Ineka were the ACT’s two finalists in the Year 11/12 category of the National History Challenge.   Jesse received a Certificate of Commendation for her fine essay on Maya (South American) cultural practices.  Ineka’s essay on the Indigenous Stolen Generations was selected as the winning entry in the Year 11/12 category and in the special Indigenous category.  But it didn’t stop there.  The final award of the night was for the ACT Young Historian of the Year.  It, too, was awarded to Ineka Voigt.

Hawker Wins the CIT Advanced Bridge Challenge

Posted on 14 Nov 2017

Congratulations to the Hawker College Industrial Design team who participated in the inaugural CIT Advanced Bridge Challenge. After a term of designing and testing their arch cross cable-stay suspension bridge, the team felt confident as they presented Franken-Bridge to the judges.

The arch cross cable-stay construction weighed in at 450 grams (the lightest in the competition).  The first 40 Kgs were loaded (the qualifying weight), and more weights were added in intervals.  The bridge remained stable up to 145 Kgs at which time they won the challenge in spectacular and catastrophic fashion, as the Franken Bridge was snapped in two and the weights were sprawled over the floor!
