Make sure you check Google Classroom daily
Teachers will communicate with you through Google Classroom. They will post updates, content and assignments to Google Classrooms. It is your responsibility to stay up-to-date with the information.
Ensure that you maintain an effective study program
The current timetable remains in place, though it will not be four hours of face to face teaching as you are used to. Online learning under the current circumstances requires flexibility and your teachers will use a range of approaches in negotiation with you, where possible.
They will teach in real time through at least one face-to-face lesson and check-ins on Google Meet during your scheduled lines; and they will present pre-recorded content, and other offline resources through Google Classrooms.
- You will have at least one face-to-face lesson with your teacher. The duration of this lesson will vary depending on the lesson and teacher expectations.
- Check-ins and teacher follow-up will generally occur during the scheduled lines for each course. Use your Line time to connect with your teacher.
Classwork that needs to be completed independently will be issued by the teachers for each lesson. You are expected to spend no less than 4 hours completing work allocated by your teachers for every subject each week in accordance with BSSS policy.
- We recommend you use your scheduled lines as much as possible. Familiar routines and structures will help you maintain progress.
- Completion of this work will be used as evidence of engagement and participation for Certification purposes.
- You will be expected to complete all classwork as prescribed by your teachers.
- If you do not engage with the material over a period of one week, teachers will email your parents/ carers and your Year Coordinator.
Online behaviour
If you are working in any online environment with others please comply with the following rules:
- Ensure your behaviour is respectful of others at all times
- Ensure your language is appropriate at all times.
- If you are required to put the camera on, ensure that your posture, dress and environment is conducive for online learning.
Note: If you fail to comply with these rules, your teacher may need to remove you from a videoconference and may need to follow up with you.
Using Google Meet
- Join the meeting via the link posted in your Google Classroom.
- Please turn your camera off and mute your mic to begin with.
- The above saves bandwidth while the meeting is in progress.
- Unmute your mic only when directed to answer a question or when you wish to ask a question.
- Remember only one person can talk at a time so please politely take a turn.
- If too many people try to talk all at once, the teacher will call upon people to speak, so everyone gets a chance to talk.
- Please ensure that you are appropriately dressed when joining the conference.
- Please ensure that your background is also appropriate.
- Remember to use appropriate language during the meet as others are listening to you speak. Perhaps parents are in the background of some homes or smaller children. Please no swearing or inappropriate language.
- If you are using the chat function, ensure that it is being used sensibly and not distracting from the purpose of the lesson.
- Never attack others personally.
- Don’t act in a way that could constitute harassment, bullying or discrimination.
- Beware of using CAPITAL LETTERS when posting questions using ‘chat’ feature. The use of CAPS can be interpreted as shouting. If you are having trouble hearing what is being said turn on captions, it’s in the settings. The script will then print across your screen. If you don’t want captions then you may need to adjust your volume settings.
Assessment
Formal Assessment will still be delivered through Google Classrooms. You will be issued with updated unit outlines (Thursday April 9). These unit outlines will reflect the formal assessments that need to be completed.
- All assessments will need to be submitted through Google Classroom, email or where directed by your teacher -Turnitin.
- Formal Tests will also be delivered through Google Classrooms or Mathspace . If a teacher chooses to set a test, this will be timed with a start time and end time. You must ensure you are ready for this. You will receive communication of any formal tests through the unit outline and Google Classroom.
- Teachers will endeavour to mark and return assessments within 3 weeks.
Online platforms that will be used for Student Learning
- Google Classroom: For communicating all classwork, assessments, and learning material.
- Google Meet: For every class that you are enrolled in, you will have at least one weekly face-to-face lesson with your teacher/s. The timing of the lesson will be reflected in the weekly schedule that you receive from your teacher in your Google Classroom. Teachers will provide a weekly link for each face-to-face lesson through Google Classrooms. You can then use this code to join the lesson.
- Attendance in these classes is mandatory and will be used as evidence of engagement and participation.
Communicating with your Teacher/s
- It is a Hawker College directive to teachers that during provision of lessons from home, no personal contact is made to students or their parents/carers using mobile or home phones.
- You can communicate with your teachers in one of the following ways:
- If you have a subject-specific question, it is advisable that you post this to the class as many other students might have the same question.
- If you have a question that revolves around personal circumstances, you can email your teacher by using their school email addresses: firstname.surname@ed.act.edu.au
Note: Teachers will be delivering their full teaching load and will endeavour to respond to your emails within 48 hours as per standard practice during working hours of 8:30AM - 4:00PM on weekdays.
