Legal Studies (A/T)

Legal Studies is about the way the law relates to and serves both individuals and the community. It focuses on developing an understanding of the way in which law is generated, structured and operates within Australian and international contexts as well as encouraging students to understand the impact of the law, legal system and legal processes in their daily lives.

Opportunities for further involvement in Legal Studies include:

  • NSW Law Society Mock Trial Competition
  • Bond University Moot Trial
  • University of Canberra Moot Competition
  • Legal Seminars
  • Constitutional Convention
  • Excursions (Supreme & Magistrates Courts, ACT Gaol, etc).

Hawker College is proud to be the hosts for the 2016 ACT Regional Mock Trial Competition. Fifteen teams have entered, including our very own team, with approximately 90 students participating in total. We will host each round and the semi-final. The grand final will be held at the ACT Supreme Court. This prestigious oratory competition is organised by Legal Oratory ACT in co-ordination with Business Educators ACT. Students are challenged to argue a legal case and must observe the strict protocols of court-room etiquette. Judges are ANU law students and the competition is sponsored by Russell Kennedy Lawyers.
