EAL – English as an Additional Language

EAL- English as an Additional Language (A/T) (previously ESL)

The EAL course is designed for students whose understanding and effective use of Standard Australian English is still developing. EAL is of equal value and rigour to all other English courses, with an emphasis on developing academic English skills.

An explicit teaching of structure, language and social/cultural aspects of Standard Australian English benefits EAL students in their studies across all curriculum areas and for future study and work. It also assists students to engage effectively with the college and wider Australian community.

EAL students explore how learning in and through English language and literature influences social and cultural identities and ways of thinking. They develop skills to use different registers of spoken and written English, so they can communicate effectively in a range of situations and for different purposes.
